It's turn-based, and the order of activation is determined by initiative: light mechs go before everyone else, then the slower mechs. This is definitely hard and obtuse at first, and I only knew what to do because I played a lot of Mechwarrior games, but you'll figure it out soon enough.Ĭombat is what most people want: Big stompy robots shooting and punching each other. Customizing mechs is more complicated than you might expect: you need to worry about weight, where to place (volatile) ammo, what kind of guns to fit, manage heat-buildup, and more. You can recruit Mechwarriors (they tend to die or get injured a lot), take on contracts, level your crew and, this is the best but daunting part, customize your Mechs. Management takes place between missions, when you're on board your spaceship. There's also The Clans, exiled techno-barbarians, but that all takes place centuries after this game.Ĭan be divided into two parts: management and combat. Most of them are (like you in this game) small-fry who scraped together a few medium and light mechs and try to make ends meet. There's also a lot of mercenary groups, who sell their services to these warring houses. Houses operate their own armies: the smallest typically have one or two lances (fighting groups of 4 mechs each), whereas the biggest factions can throw hundreds at their enemies. These battlemechs are towering behemoths of armored steel and lots and lots of weaponsm piloted by Mechwarriors. But instead of knights and soldiers, they use giant Battlemechs. Imagine Game of Thrones in Space, or Dune in the near-future: different houses hold different regions of known space and they constantly try to backstab each other. Let's see how far these robots can take us with another expansion. If you're a fan of Battletech, all you need to know that it's a very fun and good recreation of the tabletop game: the Battlemechs all look amazing (models are straight from MechWarrior Online, which is a very good thing), tactics all work like I remember them (overheating, destroying components, etc), and the campaign is a nice mix of story missions and random contracts. Rich McCormick told us BattleTech's been improved by updates too, though not changed massively. If you're new to all this, hey, the base game has a 66% discount too.Īfter a slow start to their relationship, our former Alec (RPS in peace) fell hard for BattleTech once the Flashpoint expansion hit. That there season pass has a 33% discount on Steam and GOG this weekend as part of the PDXCON sale. It will cost £15.49/€19.99/$19.99 separately or come as part of BattleTech's season pass. No firm word yet on when Heavy Metal will launch.

For now, he explains to me the Noisy Cricket scenario: "There's a cool little mech called the Flea with a gun called the Coil Beam that gets stronger and stronger the further it runs in a turn, then blows the shit out of massive mechs." That sounds great. Nate will tell us more about what he saw at PDXCON next week. Two old characters, the Bounty Hunter and Black Widow of Wolf's Dragoons, on one new Flashpoint thread focused on a derelict cargo ship which has drifted in from deep space. Paradox say the vintage mechs come with "unique equipment that reflects the flavor and lore of the original board game." Eight new weapons, including a 'Mech Mortar which deals splash damage to multiple units and Inferno Missiles that light up targets.

Our boy Nate, who is out at PDXCON in Berlin, tells me one of the new weapons coming in Heavy Metal "Reminded of the tiny 'Noisy Cricket' gun in Men In Black." As well as new ways to murder robots, it'll have new story reasons to do it, with a new Flashpoint "mini-campaign" featuring ye olde folks from Wolf's Dragoons. Heavy Metal is the expansion's name, and adding more dirty gert lumps of metal is its name. The next expansion for BattleTech will bring new mechs and characters from its tabletop days as well as new weapons, Paradox announced today at their PDXCON fanfest.
